STEM Outreach

A large goal of mine ever since I began designing and building was outreach. I always sought to spread the STEM fields through inspiring people with my projects because how I got involved myself was through engineering and maker fairs. At any opportunity I get, I try to demonstrate my multirotors and robots at such events to inspire future generations to tinker and learn through experimentation.

In August of 2014, I held a booth alongside my FRC robotics team at Airfest 2014, an aerospace technology and flight demonstration show held at the Lewis University Airport. The event was primarily for boy scouts to explore careers in aerospace and aviation, but all types of technology lovers were present.

My booth showcased a basic quadcopter with an FPV (first person view) setup so that the boy scouts could see through the quadcopter’s camera via a video transmitter. I explained how I built the quadcopter and its functions in 10 minute presentations throughout the day. It was a fruitful day for both the fields of STEM education and RC flight.

All kids with even the slightest curiosity will begin to wonder how they can mimic the feats of engineering they see around them; given the right tools, the world becomes their very own erector set. This is what I aspire to encourage through my outreach.
